Hibiscus

I worked with a few new products today; they are the MFT Hibiscus die and one of the  Sizzix "Heart and Ornate Frame Set" embossing folders I just picked up at Joan's Gardens.

I used the Hibiscus dies from MFT but I also want to tell you that Memory Box also has a new "Hibiscus Flower" with includes a long stamen; the MFT hibiscus does not have a long stamen.  I will be working with that die next time I create a hibiscus. I die cut the flower using salmon card stock then sponged on Distress Ink "Fired Brick"  in the center.  I die cut the center of the flower in black card stock then used a punch to create a hole in the center.  I had to get creative to figure out how to make a hibiscus stamen and ended up using a yellow pipe cleaner.  I added glue to the top portion of the pipe cleaner, then rolled it in yellow beads.  I poked the pipe cleaner through the hole in the center of the flower and cut off the pipe cleaner so I had just enough to bend along the bottom of the flower so it would stand up.  I attached the flower with a large glue dot.  You have to allow time for the glue to dry before attaching it to your card because the beads will fall off if you handle them too much. The beads stick really well once the glue is dry. These stamens might be a little large but I think look pretty realistic  until I can come up with something different.

I placed the flowers on the side of this 6" x 5.5" card front; I embossed the Ornate Frame on the right side.  When I think of hibiscus, I think about being in San Diego or Hawaii.  I decided to add the sail boat in the center of the embossed frame since these flowers and sail boats, in my head, seem to go together.  The boat is by Marianne Design.  The wave border is a new die from Memory Box called "Oceana Border".  The sentiment is from the JustRite "Anchors Away" stamp set; it was cut out with a Spellbinders petite oval and attached with dimensional dots.

I think I will give this card to one of my grandsons when we go to San Diego.  Both of them will have a birthday in August.

Strawberry Box

When I started this card I had no idea what I was going to do.  In fact, it wasn't even going to be a card.  I have this cute strawberry box die from Joan's Gardens and wanted to use it for a little box to hold some birthday money for one of my granddaughters.  I kept going and ended up making a card.

The die I used for the strawberry box is the My Favorite Things "Berry Box".  In this picture you can see the die and the die cut pieces and supplies I used to complete the box.  I love that the die includes very realistic "dimples" in the strawberry and the stem on top looks so realistic.  It was very easy to put together.  This box will hold some money or small pieces of chocolate or even one large piece of extra special chocolate.  Along the top you can see a piece of green hemp that is 20 inches long.  I have threaded a green button on it and placed it in the center. This gives stability to the closure when pulling the hemp tight.  You could use a narrow piece of ribbon if you want.  The red strawberry is pre-scored and holes in the top of each section for easy assembly.  There is a tab to close the box and you can see I added a piece of ScorTape.

The top has been die cut using green card stock and folded along the score lines.  The hemp was threaded through the four holes in the top then through the button and tied in a bow on the top.

Another view showing you the top.  I trimmed off some of the ends of the hemp.  When you thread it through the holes in a button, sometimes it wants to fray so that is why I made it longer than needed.

I have included several views so you can see the finished strawberry box.  I attached it to the card with a piece of Velcro.  It looks so real, doesn't it!

For the background on this card I used the Dotted Swiss embossing folder on the red card stock.  The doily is the Spellbinders "Butterfly Circles" die; on top of the Butterfly Circle I added the Memory Box "Quinn Flourish".  This flourish adds such a pretty background for so many things!  Across the top of the card I added some of the little butterflies that came out of the "Butterfly Circle".  I love it when you can use the "left overs" from die cut pieces.  Along the bottom I thought some strawberry flowers would look good.  I use the Cheery Lynn "Darling Daisies" die for the flowers and added a stamen from the Cheery Lynn "Build A Flower #1" die set.  The cute little leaves are from the Cheery Lynn "Flourish Leaf Strip".  On the underside of the card I added a punched border doily; I used the Martha Stewart "Double Arches" punches.

This card will be put in a small gift bag.  My granddaughter can pull the strawberry off to get the money enclosed.  I think she will like this "unique" card.

All the products used on this card can be purchased from Joan's Gardens:

Large Butterfly

I have been very busy creating many different flowers with the new Cheery Lynn Build A Flower #2  dies that will be released Aug 15.  I am very excited about this set of dies and know you will love them.  So far, I have designed about 20 different flowers with this set and can probably keep going.  I will be posting all these flowers on my blog on Aug 15.   Joan has been taking pre-orders for these dies, so she will know how many to order for those of you that want them as soon as they are released.  If you love to make flowers, I'm sure you will love the new Build A Flower #2.

Have you seen all the new products at Joan's Gardens, if not, you should go over and see these products and view the videos.  Be sure you check out the new die cutting machine called the Ebosser.  Joan has a video on her blog about it and has been getting lots of orders for it.  After seeing it in action at CHA, Joan and I both think this is the best die cutting machine on the market.  We can hardly wait until ours arrive.

The card above is the card I designed for the challenge at Joan's Gardens last week.  I was at Joan's house at the time and did not have my computer with me.  I want to tell you about these new products.

The green doily is a new Marianne Design frame.  There are four pieces in this package.  The beautiful butter is the new Memory Box "Chloe Butterfly" along with the angle wing "Tristan Butterfly".You can use these butterflies together or as separate pieces.   Doesn't it make a beautiful center piece for a card!  I used a piece of yellow design paper for the angle wing.  I am really excited about this new fern; it is from Memory Box and is called "Delicate Fern".  Isn't is beautiful.  I scored two line around the outside edge of the card.  This was another quick and easy card to create.

All these products can be purchased from Joan's Gardens.

Joan's Gardens Weekly Challenge

I'm having a hard time catching up with time since I came home from Joan's and CHA.  It is already Thursday and time for a new weekly challenge at Joan's Gardens.  I created this card while I was at Joan's house.  She has so many new products in stock that were very fun to "play" with.

The challenge this week is:
Make a birthday card
Use black and pink with some green
Use leaves
Have a pattern design paper for your background

I used the new Spellbinders new "Cut-Fold-Tuck" Shapeabilities on this card.  I remember the old days when you had to use a pattern and craft knife to create this type of design.  Now all you do is die cut then fold back each of the petals and tuck.  It is so easy.  You can use two sided paper or do as I did -- I sponged the back of the die cut with a darker green so the folded back sections would stand out when folded back and tucked in.  I know you will have fun with this new die set.  The rose is one I created for the ladies attending the Friday get-together at Joan's.  The pretty green leaves were die cut using the new Memory Box "Cottage Leaf".  They were die cut using two different shades of green card stock.  I'm sorry, but I don't remember which design paper I used.  The pretty little leaves around the rose are the Marianne (LR0156);  I think you must know I love these leaves since I use them so much.  The sentiment is from a new JustRite set that I did not bring home and don't remember the name.  The butterflies are one of the Cheery Lynn Mini Butterflies. Kaiser Craft pearls were added to complete the card.

I hope you will join us this week in our challenge.

All the products I used can be purchased from Joan's Gardens.

Friend

I am always excited when we get new dies from Marianne Design.  Joan's Gardens has in stock two new Marianne frame dies I know you will love.  Both these die sets include four separate dies, so the possibilities of lots of different designs on your cards are possible.  I included all four dies on this card.  There is a pretty die that I cut using pink card stock to back the detailed ivory frame.  On top of that I die cut one of the other dies in the package to use as a background for the sentiment.  The other two pieces in this die set are die cut using ivory card stock and were attached to the bottom corners.

The stamped sentiment and medallion frame are from the JustRite "Vintage Rose Medallions" stamp set. It was colored using Distress Markers.  The pretty corners are from the Cheery Lynn "Lace Corner Deco H" set.   The roses were taken from a supply of flowers I pre-made.  Behind the roses I added two of the Marianne (LRO192) embellishments and the Marianne "Garden Branch".  The design paper is from the Echo Park Paper Co "Country Drive" paper pad.

All these products can be purchased from Joan's Gardens.

CHA Trip

What a fabulous time I had going out to Indiana to see Joan and Jon then off to CHA.  Joan organized a day for me to meet some of our followers.  We all enjoyed a wonderful lunch and lots of time to visit. In the afternoon I showed them how to create a couple of flowers and furnished a box for them to decorate.  Joan has the names of everyone  listed on her blog.  Many of these wonderful ladies drove 5 to 6 hours.  I want to thank all of them for taking the time to come spend the day with us.

I flew in to South Bend, Indiana so I could spend some time with Joan and Jon before going to CHA. I have wanted to see Notre Dame and they took me on a tour.  What a beautiful campus.  Joan also took me shopping and lunch at a great place called the Village.    It was so fun to get to spend a day shopping with Joan.

I got to enjoy so much great food on this trip.  I only took a picture of this one meal.  I was amazed when I saw this and had  to send this picture to my husband.  This is a Chicago pizza.  Oh my -- you can only eat one piece but so delicious.  Every day we dined at some of the most popular restaurants in Chicago.  Another fabulous entree was one Joan ordered at a different restaurant.  It was pasta placed in a huge wedge of cheese that was hollowed out, stirred around scrapping the cheese off the bottom and sides, then scooped out onto a plate.  Joan said it was so delicious.

This is the group I hung out with at CHA -- Bette, Cathy, and Joan.  Cathy is Joan's niece.  She is such a great organizer and kept Joan and me on track all through the show.  She is such a fun person to hang out with.  Bette is such a sweet person and I loved that we got to spend a lot of time with her too.  Joan and I had so much fun checking out all the new products and deciding what all of you would like to see in her store.  We found lots of great things but one we are both really excited about is the EBosser, which is a new electronic die cutting machine. It will emboss 8.5" x 11" card stock and the other fabulous thing is that it won't allow improper "sandwiches" to go through that will jam the machine.   Joan has posted a video on her blog about this new machine.  Joan and I will have one in a couple of weeks and we will be able to tell you more about it then.

We had fun dressing up at the Graphic 45 Booth to have our photo taken.
Left to right - Bette, Cathy, me, and Joan sitting.

I loved to hang out at the LaBlanche booth and watch Jacqueline create her beautiful cards.

Tim Holtz always has amazing demonstrations.  Joan and I hung out at Tim's booth a lot and learned lots of new things we plan to share with you.

On the last day, we all had an opportunity to get a picture taken with Tim Holtz and his team.  We all received an autographed stamp set too.

This is a picture of Pam (Stampin' Pam).  She took me to a fabulous restaurant for dinner and we had a wonderful time visiting.

One of the fun things about going to CHA is seeing so many people you know only through blogging.  I had many people, I don't know, come up to me and say they follow me on my blog.  It was so exciting to see them.  I think we all love Becca (www.amazingpapergrace.com)   and her beautiful work.  I had the honor to meet her.  This is a picture of me, Joan, and Becca.

I was excited to visit the Heartfelt Creations booth to meet Linda Bontrager and Emma Lou Beechy.  I only have this one picture but many were taken of all of us.  This is is picture of Linda, me, and Joan standing in front of the beautiful July release display.  You could spend hours looking at all the gorgeous projects created by the design team.

This is a picture of  Angelica Turner (http://bellisimavida.blogspot.com/) and me. She was working in the Heartfelt Creations booth.  We served on the same design team and I was so happy to have the opportunity to meet her.

Joan, Cathy, and I ended our stay in Chicago having lunch with Bette.  I went back to Joan's house so we could finalized the projects for Joan's workshop next month, then came home yesterday.  I had a fabulous time.

Heartfelt Creations Winter Collection

Heartfelt Creations is at CHA and are showing the new Winter collection.  I was sent the stamps in this collection early so we can give you a sneak peak at what will be coming out next month.  This card is made with one of the new stamps  called "Festive Yuletide Doorway".  Isn't it beautiful!   I stamped it on a very light tan card stock and colored it with Distress Markers.  To get the snow effect, I used a new product you can order from Joan's Gardens called "Copic Opaque White".   This is an white opaque liquid you paint on with a brush.  I used it full strength above the door and on the sleigh, and thinned it down with water to paint the snow on the ground and on the bunny.  It really gives great coverage.  Once it was dry, I added some Sparking Diamonds glitter over it.  Some glitter was also added to the wreath.  To add dimension, I stamped the tree and basket from the Heartfelt Creations "Classic Edition" stamp set; they are in the July Collection.  The basket was die cut using the matching die in this collection.  The tree and basket were added with dimensional tape.  Three black Dew Drops were added to complete this card.

Well most of you know I am away at CHA.  I will be back home on Sunday.

You can preorder these new Heartfelt Creations stamps from Joan's Gardens.

More Fun Heartfelt Creations Stamps

Nothing says Fall like pumpkins and sunflowers.  The stamps used for this card are from the new Fall collection from Heartfelt Creations.  The large pumpkin and sunflower were stamped and colored with Distress Inks.  The image was die cut using the Spellbinders Classic Circle Large Nestabilities.  It was sponged before taking it out of the die.  The smaller pumpkins, from this same set, were stamp, colored, and die cut using the matching dies,  to place around the larger pumpkin.  These stamps are from the Heartfelt Creations "Pumpkin Harvest" set.

The design paper I used is from the new Graphics 45 "Happy Haunting" paper pad.  The sunflowers were created with one of the smallest Spellbinders "Sunflower Set Two" die.  The centers were created with stamens from the Cheery Lynn "Build A Flower #2" die set.  I used brown and rust colored card stock for them.

You can purchase these new Heartfelt Creations stamps and dies from Joan's Gardens.

Heartfelt Creations July Collection

I am away at CHA in Chicago, but I worked on a few cards before leaving to show you while I am away.  The new Heartfelt Creations "Classic Editions" Collection stamps are being released today.  It is full of fun stamps and matching dies for the fall season and colder days. This collection includes a rustic truck, wooden wagon, playful dog, berries, apples, and pumpkins.

Living in the northwest, we have all kinds of delicious berries so I could hardly wait to create a card with these beautiful stamps.  I used one of the Sizzix "Birds & Wreath" embossing folders for the background.  Two stamps from the Heartfelt Creations "Ornamental Raspberries" were stamped, colored with Distress Markers and cut out to place around the embossed frame.  The butterflies were cut out of one of the Heartfelt Creations flourishes in the "Wings of Hope" and the sentiment is from the Heartfelt Creations "Heartfelt Expressions".

I hope you will go over to Joan's Gardens to see all the fun stamps in this fall collection from Heartfelt Creations. There are lots of stamps and a set of new dies you will have fun creating your cards with for the fall season.  As in the past, Joan will have a special on this "I Want It All" Collection

Joan's Gardens Weekly Challenge

It is time for another weekly challenge at Joan's Gardens.  This week we want you to create a card with four layers using green and ivory.  Also use only a stamped image and a sentiment.  Very easy isn't it.

I really love this stamped image, don't you!   But then you knew I would say that, didn't you.  There is not a flower I don't like.  This is a new stamp by Impression Obsession and was so easy to color.  I used Distress Markers to blend color only the ends of each petal and then shaded two greens on the leaves.  Very quick and easy but I think created a beautiful card.  The sentiment I used is from the new JustRite "Vintage Rose Medallions" stamp set.  The background was embossed with the Sizzix "Corners & Lattice" embossing folder.

I'm at Joan's house today and we are going out for a  fun day of shopping, stopping for lunch, then more shopping.  We have never had time to just go out and have fun together, so this is a real treat for me.

I hope you will join us this week in this easy challenge.  You should go over to Joan's Blog to see all the challenge rules and to see what the prize will be for this week.  If you are not already, I know you will want to be in that drawing at the end of the year for the $100 gift certificate to Joan's Gardens

Just Thinking About You

I will be leaving Wednesday to fly out to Indiana to see Joan.  I am looking forward to spending some fun time with Joan.  I am also excited about the get together she planned for Friday so I can meet a lot of you.  I have my little project all ready.  Joan and I will be going up to Chicago on Sunday to attend CHA.  I am so excited.  I will have a few posts on my blog while I am gone.  One of the posts will be for the Joan's Gardens Weekly Challenge this week, then next week I will have a few posts for the new Heartfelt Creations July and August releases.

For my card today I used some of the roses I created a few weeks ago.  I used the Spellbinders "Bitty Blossoms" dies.  The center of the roses were sponged with a peach ink.  The pretty flourish behind them is the Cheery Lynn "Victorian Romance Flourish.  I tucked in a few of the Cheery Lynn small leaf branches.

The background was embossed with one of the  Sizzix "Thank You Set #5" embossing folders.  I used one of the stamps from the Heartfelt Creations "Heartfelt Expressions" stamp set for the sentiment.  I love the size of all the sentiments in this set.  To complete this card, I added a few Kaiser Craft "Bliss" pearls.

All these products can be purchased from Joan's Gardens.

Purple and White Flowers

Today I made a card with some flowers made with the Spellbinders "Spiral Blossom 3" die. They are the large white flowers.  These flowers are very easy to roll.  I wanted the one on the upper right side to open more than the other two, so I clipped between each of the petals to help it open up more. It created a little larger flower.  The purple flowers were pulled out of my "flower" drawer and I believe were made with one of the Spellbinders "Bitty Blossoms" dies.

The die cut frame under the flowers is from the Spellbinders "Antique Frame and Accents" die set.  I'm not sure you can see them very well but there are some little Marianne Design leaf embellishments under the flowers.  The green leaves were also cut with a Spellbinders leaf die.  The corners are from the Spellbinders "Moroccan Accents" die set.

All these products can be purchased from Joan's Gardens.

Two Tone Rose Tutorial

These flowers are very easy to make.  I posted a tutorial  on June 14 but thought I should post the tutorial again.

I used the Marianne (DS0907) embossing folder on the top of the card. A piece of pink card stock was attached to the back so the die cut areas would show up.  The bottom panel was embossed with the Swiss Dots embossing folder. I layered the Marianne Design embossed panel over the Swiss Dots embossed panel. The die cut Cheery Lynn "Border Carnivale" lace was attached across the bottom edge of the Marianne Design embossed panel.   The roses were made with the Spellbinders "Spiral Blossom One" and "Bitty Blossoms" dies.   Behind the roses I cut apart the  Cheery Lynn "Victorian Romance Flourish", the Cheery Lynn "Tropical Flourish" and a Cheery Lynn green "Tropical Leaf".  I had the two pearl/tulle embellishments in my "stash".   A couple Kaiser Craft pearls were added to complete the card.

TUTORIAL

I used the Spellbinders "Spiral Blossom One" die for these roses, but you can accomplish the same look using any spiral blossom die.  In the picture above, there are two of these die cuts to show the back and the front after they were sponged.  I used "Spun Sugar" Distress Ink and sponged the first two petals on the top, of both front and back,  because I wanted the center of the rose to be very pink.  I used a small finger sponge dauber to apply the ink.  I wanted the tips of the rest of the petals to be white so I only sponged down along the bottom of each petal, on the front only, of the rest of the petals.

Next I used a fine mister to dampen the die cut.  This not only helps spread out the sponged color (so it doesn't look so "sponged on"), but it also softens the card stock so you can add "texture" to the petals. Be sure to just "lightly" mist the card stock.  If you get it too wet, it will not hold its shape.    Let it sit for a couple of minutes then blot off any excess water. If the card stock isn't holding the "wrinkles", use your heat gun to dry it a little.   "Accordion fold" or "scrunch" the petals  from the small end of the petals all the way down to the center (which will be the outer petals of the flower).  You don't need to fuss about how it looks because you are just getting a ruffled look.  Once it is all "scrunched" use your heat gun to dry it completely so it will hold that shape.  Once it is dry, you can pull out some of the tight gathers and the creases will remain.

Next I used the round nose pliers to start rolling and shaping the rose.  I like using these pliers because they don't create any creases and they are the perfect width for the rolled rose.  You can wind it very tight  in the center then wind it loosely for the outside petals to create the perfect shaped rose.  When you get it all rolled, cover that round center at the end with glue, which will be the bottom of the rose,  and press the shaped rose down on into the glue.  I like using "Crafter's Pick" glue for this because it is a thick white glue that is very strong. You can play with the rose before it completely dries to get just the shape you want.  Hold it down for about a minute to let the glue dry slightly so it hold the rose in the shape you want.  You can use the round nose pliers to gently roll out some of the edges of the petals for a more realistic look.  Like I said before, these pliers will not crease the ends of the petals.

I hope all this information answers all your questions about making these pretty roses. If you use my tutorial for these roses and post them on your blog, I would love it if you will link back to my blog.

Have a safe and fun 4th of July.

Pretty Roses

Gosh, it is so nice to be missed.  I have been real busy working on designing cards for two new Heartfelt Creation releases that will to be posted while I am away, finishing up a workshop project for Joan, working with some new Impression Obsession dies and stamps from Joan's Gardens, and a project to take out to Joan's next week and haven't posted for a few days.  I have received some emails wanting to know where I am, then today I received this email "It is 3 days that I did not received any mails with your beautiful work. It is the highlite in the morning. Please send some mails my dear.  Pat"   I thought I better take a break and make a card for you today.

I used the flowers I made when I was teaching Pat how to make them last Saturday. I love how fast a card can go together when you already have the flowers made in advance.

One more week and I will be leaving to go out to Joan's Gardens.  She has planned a get together for anyone that wants to come visit while I am there.  This morning I was working on a little project I plan to take out for everyone to work on that day.  If you would like to attend, please be sure to let Joan know so we  have enough projects for everyone.  I'm looking forward to visiting with all of you attending.

All the products I used to create this card can be purchased from Joan's Gardens.
